As smokers, we have already lost fundamental civil rights.
The state-endorsed wisdom is telling us that the discrimination is not against
us, but against our habit.
Assuming -- but not believing -- that this is in good faith, it is nevertheless naive.
Centuries of humanism have proven that is not possible to extract from an individual what is not desirable.
Individuals have to be accepted in their entirety, if we want them to be productive contributors to our
society. Many have tried this insane philosophy, all have failed
Selecting out smoking constitutes a dangerous precedent for future discriminations to be
perpetrated against anything or anyone considered undesireable.
The state-endorsed wisdom is telling us that we are a burden to society.
This is a lie. Smokers contribute more to society than nonsmokers.
- Smokers pay much more tax than nonsmokers. Each year, in Canada they pay in excess of 2 billion
dollars in tobacco tax alone. This figure in the States exceeds 17 billion dollars. This abundantly covers
the extra medical attention that smokers may require, and the billions of dollars left over increase the
wealth of society as a whole.
- Smokers tend to have shorter lives than nonsmokers, while contributing more.
This means that they are less of a burden to society during their non-productive years, since they collect less pension, and
require less medical attention, though it is possible that some of the illnesses that may affect smokers
require longer therapies.
Logic, common sense and fairness indicate that people who contribute more should be entitled to more, or at least the same as lesser contributors. We all know that quite the opposite is true.
The following list illustrates just a few of the rights we have been deprived of when we choose to smoke:
The Right to Life
The Right to Travel
The Right to Work
The Right to be a Parent
The Right to Privacy
The Right to Pursue happiness on private property
